Armchair Calibration

The ongoing improvement of your developing calibrating skills should be high, way high, on your practice list. Without calibrating skills NLP Processes are so effective they may still work, but good calibrating skills are the difference between those who operate processes with effective eyes wide shut and those who are genuinely engaged in NLP.

Our practitioner course goes much further that the vague and general ‘’see what you see and hear what you hear”. Our Newcastle NLP Practitioner and Newcastle Hypnotherapy courses is about the real application and continued development of your NLP calibration skills. So we will direct your attention to the specific things you can detect differences in.

Here is one way to train you peripheral vision and peripheral focus and all from the comfort of your favourite settee or arm chair while watching whatever you like on the box.

While watching the television programme of you choice

  1. Pull your eyes away from the centre of the screen and
  2. Focus you eyes just past the left top corner of the TV watch for 5 minutes
  3. Focus you eyes just past the right top corner of the TV watch for 5 minutes
  4. Focus you eyes just past the right bottom corner of the TV watch for 5 minutes
  5. Focus you eyes just past the left bottom corner of the TV watch for 5 minutes

Now while you ‘rotate’ you vision around the television, alter your focus to see beyond the television and in front of the television, play around with this until the picture you are seeing with your peripheral vision is focused in your peripheral field.

If you find this too easy move a greater distance beyond the edges of the TV. IF this is currently too difficult start just a short way from the centre of the television.

IntegrityNLP
Learn Practice Understand

One of the skill sets you will learn on our NLP Practitioner in Newcastle is applying NLP conversationally.   This can often be just a few minutes talking.   whether you are a hypnotherapist, a coach or a line manager  conversational change processes are really elegant and simple and as I have said short so they can go on over coffee or tea.

The real skill being to recognise the problem presented and through gentle exploration discover where you can apply leverage to help people shift from a problem state to more resourceful ones.

I have chosen to include this example of conversation belief change as it is short and to the point.

If you want to see this example please go to the ‘Free Resources’ section of www.communicatingexcellence.com. To access this you will have to have requested my complementary newsletter.

Communicating Excellence
Excellence in Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy

It is surely obvious to all concerned that that old Meta Model is just about hearing some language pattern and responding in a certain way. Clearly not everyone gets this fully the second time. Evidently some people were puzzled and didn’t easily start to apply the Meta Model that they knew consciously so not so surprisingly it got put on a back shelf for a while. So get it out, dust it off and lets get on with making it more easier.

the Meta Model essentially does two things when used ‘as intended’

  1. It assist stuck clients to change - Therapeutic
  2. It gets high quality information - Business / Pleasure / Therapeutic

the Integrity NLP Practitioner in Newcastle naturally will cover the Meta Model and those who are on our Newcastle Hypnotherapy course certainly will leave with an even fuller knowledge of applying this process.

clearly if you are in any therapeutic field like the many complementary therapies or thinking of taking up your calling, you might like to consider our Newcastle hypnotherapy course, anyway it will certainly benefit you knowing a lot more about this set of verbal responses - but clearly, that’s obvious, isn’t it.

It makes me genuinely smile genuinely now when some people still visibly cringe when they hear the words ‘the Meta Model‘. Others say “it’s something I have to learn but I just can’t find the time” yet other say “It’s just not possible to learn it all“, actually the Meta Model really is easy.

the Meta Model essentially does two things when used ‘as intended’

  1. It assist stuck clients to change - Therapeutic
  2. It gets high quality information - Business / Pleasure / Therapeutic

For me, and thanks to my friend Ian Berry for facilitating my learning during my NLP Practitioner in Newcastle, the Meta Model just made sense. It clicked. It got me absolutely hooked on what I then called NLP and I now know as applied NLP. The Meta Model is again covered more fully on our Newcastle Hypnotherapy course and I am sure you already know, like most NLP, it’s nothing new, just repackaged. Socrates was applying a form of the meta model in purportedly just 6 questions, some 2500 years ago: Socratic questioning. I will credit him here as he surely deserves it.

See, all the Meta Model is is a set of specific verbal responses to a set of very specific words and phrases ‘clients’ and people in general use all the time. Exactly what these are I will better describe a little later on.

Our Newcastle based training of our NLP Practitioner course is filling up fast! There are only 7 places left! If you are thinking about doing an NLP Practitioner in Newcastle upon Tyne or in the North East of England then do have a look at our responses to Andy Smith’s guide to choosing an NLP Practitioner course. In addition to NLP you will also learn Hypnotic and Hypnotherapy skills too.

Andy Smith of Practical EQ has written an excellent summary of ways to choose an NLP Practitioner course that’s right for you. Given the plethora of courses available in all sorts of styles, this is a very helpful guide to new ‘NLP shopper’.

Here’s my shortened version of his list.

How to choose a practitioner course

  1. What is the emphasis of the course? Therapy, business, self development or general purpose.
  2. How big is the course? Course sizes can range from 12 to 500! How big would you like your group to be?
  3. ‘Intensive’ or ‘Extensive’? Intensive courses can be as little as 7 days long, extensive courses are usually 20 days long.
  4. How is the course structured?
Does the course run for 10 days straight, or one weekend a month over
10 months? Do you want to complete the course quickly or do you want
time to take it on board and integrate the learning into your life.
  5. How much access do you get to the trainer? Is the trainer available to answer questions or does he use assistants and coaches to do that work?
  6. How much are NLP Practitioner courses? The pricing varies from under £1,000 to £3,000 that’s quite an investment.
  7. How much does the personality of the trainer matter?
Does your trainer inspire trust? Do you feel at ease with them? If
possible meet up with them before taking a training to find out what
    they are like.
  8. Does accreditation matter?
Since there is no official body setting the standards a lot training
institutes adding their own ‘accreditation’ to the trainings.

Here are our answers to his questions

Emphasis of the course:
Practical application, our course is structured so that you learn by doing. NLP is not a theoretical subject and through experiential learning you will gain skills and techniques that you will be able to apply in your own life and others. In doing the exercises you will not only learn NLP you will also develop mentoring or coaching skills that will assist you in applying NLP with others as well as yourself. We work from the NLP foundations of rapport, calibration and behavioural flexibility while having a specific outcome in mind. We also have a
very strong emphasis on ethics and the appropriate use of these powerful skills.

Group size:
To give you the right amount contact and interaction with course facilitators our maximum group size will be 24 participants. There are usually two facilitators and at least one assistant.

Length of the course:
We adopt The Professional Guild of NLP’s minimum contact time of 120 hours direct contact. We run your course over 10 months and this 20 days at one weekend per month. We understand the importance of having time to integrate your learning through experience we have found this format works best.

There is absolutely no requirement to do any additional outside study or purchase additional materials as all required material is provided and our comprehensive course more than covers The Professional Guild of NLP’s requirements for Practitioner Level training. For those who want to know more we provide a comprehensive reading, audio and video list to help them develop their understanding and skills.

Structure of the course:
Our NLP Practitioner course is one weekend per month over a ten month period. We give a lot of time to experiential learning, a cycle of instruction, practice and reflection.
At the beginning of each weekend, in keeping with our emphasis on practical application in the real world, we share and explore our experiences of NLP over the past month and share our learnings and discoveries as well as answering any questions that arise.

Access to the facilitators:
During the course the facilitators and assistants are readily available during the training and breaks. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and fully participate in the experiential learning.
We don’t leave in-between training weekends we offer an on-line forum where you can ask questions and share thoughts and experiences with your fellow participants and facilitators.

How much is the course:
We strongly believe that this amazing and incredibly beneficial technology that is NLP should be within reach of as many people as possible. We provide excellent and affordable training (we don’t use fancy hotels or drive flashy cars) our NLP Practitioner course is great value at just £995 or £850 if you book early.

Personality of your facilitators:
We have three very different trainers working on our NLP Practitioner Training. We think that the wide variety of approaches beautifully demonstrates that there is no one ‘true’ way of using NLP it can be used effectively in many ways by many different people. You don’t have to be a clone of the trainer to get results.

We welcome people from all walks of life on our NLP Practitioner training. We also make clear that an NLP Practitioner Training is an opportunity to learn skills not a substitute for therapy. Although it is likely that what you will learn on the course can change your life.

Accreditation:
IntegrityNLP training facilitators are accredited NLP Trainers with The Professional Guild of NLP, one of our trainers is also accredited as an NLP Trainer by Dr. John Grinder ( the co-creator ) of NLP.

Your NLP Practitioner is certified by The Professional Guild of NLP.

How we assess your progress.

  • Through continuous assessment throughout the course
  • There is no written examination ( NLP is a practical application subject )
  • The final weekend is a series of practical exercises that are designed to show your application of your learnings over the course period. Unlike exams most people really enjoy the experience.

This is the first in a short series of articles about how not to get what you want. Here’s my first failure tip, follow this reliably and you are bound to go wrong

Spend your time thinking about what you don’t want

Think in great detail about what you don’t want, what’s wrong with
your life, work, relationships, etc. Make a detailed list of what’s
wrong.

If you’re a bit stuck here are some suggestions:

  • I don’t want to be fat.
  • I’m fed up of this rubbish job.
  • I can’t stand my partner.
  • I don’t want to live in this pokey little flat.
  • I hate the way my family treat me

You might be asking: “But, what if this is true?” “What if I really
don’t want some of these things”. “Isn’t it good to be honest and tell
it how it is?”

It may be true, but it isn’t very helpful. Thinking and talking about what you don’t want sends your brain in the wrong direction. Focus on the problem and you’ll find yourself ever more deeply immersed in it. What you think about grows stronger. Dwelling on what you don’t want is a great way to remain stuck there.

Not only does thinking this way keep you stuck it also stops you
from considering where you would prefer to be. Humans like all other
life forms are goal seeking entities. We have needs and desires, we
want them fulfilled and we’ll take steps to get to them. However if you
don’t know what your goal is, seeking it can be very difficult.

Imagine you get into a taxi and tell the driver “I don’t like it
here, take me somewhere else”. The taxi driver is probably going to ask
“Where would you like to go?”. If all you can tell him is “Anywhere,
but here” you (and the driver) are in for a frustrating experience.

This is why this is such a great two-for-the-price-of-one failure tip - Focus on what you don’t want and you can stay stuck and avoid better alternatives.

Try this

If you are good at “don’t want-ing”, you might like to try this
little exercise as one way of turning what you don’t want into what you
do want.

1. Make a list of some of your ‘favourite’ don’t wants.

2. Add them one at a time to this question, ask the question of yourself and think about the answers

If you don’t want …………………………………., what do you want?

If the answer to this question is another “don’t want”, put that in the space and ask the question of that.

If you are very used to thinking about what you don’t want this
might seem like quite an effort. If you don’t want to be stuck it’s a
very useful first step on the way out.

Many NLP and Hypnotherapeutic processes are concerned with beneficial change.

If you were to watch a flower grow and bloom over the spring and summer, you will know that in addition to preparing for the next season of change this seasons change does not happen all at once, it is a gradual unfolding over time that culminates in blossom and the increasing of life.

On Saturday I was at my good friend and NLP Trainer’s Simon Bonnin’s and, as we often do we ended up exploring and experimenting with NLP and Hypnotherapy change processes. Now we have jointly come up with something we want to share. It is incredibly simple and incredibly effective.

IntegrityNLP is running an NLP Practitioner beginning this September as well as a Hypnotherapy Diploma course ( both in Newcastle upon Tyne ) and this process will certainly be demonstrated on both courses, however here it is here first.

This process works on so called ‘limiting beliefs’ and the process works at the level of values and importance to loosen up the so called ‘limiting belief’

Here is an example

I cant feel happy [ limiting belief and implied value ]

Do you believe it is important to feel happy?
Do you believe it will be valuable to you to feel happy?
Is feeling happy important enough and valuable enough to change that old belief?

[ if there is a no response to any of these 3 questions respect the answer and stop here - after all this is just loosening! ]

Do you think, it is now possible for you to feel happy.

[ respect any answer - its just loosening! ]

Here is the verbal pattern

I cant ‘X’ [ limiting belief and implied value ]

Do you believe it is important to ‘X’?

Do you believe it will be valuable to you to ‘X’?

Is ‘X’ important enough and valuable enough to change that old belief?

[ if there is a no response to any of these 3 questions respect the response and stop here - after all this is just loosening! ]

Do you think, it is now possible for you to ‘X’.

[ respect any response - its just loosening! ]

best wishes
