NLP has many tools and processes that are specifically designed to take away the negative emotional charge of past events. The popular name of Change Personal History can describe the class of processes that deal with this.
As a practising clinical hypnotherapist I fully appreciate the immense power of the unconscious mind and the limitless resources and healing powers it contains.

Those past events that are negatively charged are like fragments singled out in time but what came before and what came after?

Something happens to the memory when the event is extend both forwards and backwards in time. It is no longer the same.

I have created a process called Event Scope and Meaning Repatterning – ESMR which harnesses your unconscious mind to create the right resources to change the memory and level the old painful memory.

One of the things that makes Christmas particularly nice is meeting up with friends and family. The time before the holidays running up to that last day at work before new year – lush! And there is always that feeling of excitement and anticipation just before the holidays start too. It makes you think doesn’t it, about the whole concept of Christmas maybe even good old Yarwe, ( oops HaShem – dear GOD, wouldn’t want to make anyone or their religion take offense, after all this is the UK – Home to free speech and liberal attitudes PROVIDING that speech is politically correct. I don’t know why I hear anarchy in the uk by sexpistols? ), before that and now the semi -global adoption of ‘christian’ values and beliefs especially by shop keepers and those not so friendly little elves from the Iceland consortium making as much money as they can, forcing suppliers to accept less than they had previously agreed – Ahh the joys of human kindness. The causes of all these conflicting undercurrents of humanity may never be known but if you will put all that stuff aside then - what you make Crimbo and new year to be really is up to you – and I do hope ( and even offer a prayer to all receptive Deity’s, God’s and Goddesses ) that for you it turns out exactly the way you wish it to be while you want it to.

the Meta Model essentially does two things when used ‘as intended’

It assist stuck clients to change – Therapeutic

It gets high quality information – Business / Pleasure / Therapeutic

Additionally the NLP Cafe, a structured, Newcastle NLP Practice group will be open for its first event on Wednesday 9th January 7-9pm. How to resourcefully respond to criticism

Its a snip at £10.00 or just £9.00 if you book online.

Our NLP Practitioner course beginning in January 2008 and the current Integrity NLP Practitioner in Newcastle will uncover the Meta Model and those who are on our next Newcastle Clinical Hypnotherapy training will leave with a well grounded and practical knowledge of applying this process therapeutically.

How good would it feel to be relating even more fully with your clients whilst still operating as an effective therapist. If you are in any therapeutic field like the many complementary therapies or thinking of expanding your skills, you could take our Newcastle clinical hypnotherapy course – it will help your communications during therapy be better, easier and faster as your incorporating new skills.

Hold on, the more you feel your getting to grips with these Meta Model interventions are a set of specific verbal responses to a set of very specific words and phrases. Its really easy, so, not so surprisingly ‘clients’ and people are using them all the time, take note, its easy to say and do, just like your full and complete learning, your getting language in a new way…

the Art of Applied NLP is when and in what contexts to apply these specific verbal responses so as not to lose friends and alienate yourself.

The Meta Model – Therapeutic Process (13)

Please note that when you use this ( or any ) process with clients you are at best creating a context where they can change their own situation.

“In psychotherapy you change no one. People change themselves. You create circumstances under which an individual can respond spontaneously and change. That’s all you do. The rest is up to them” – Milton Erickson

Now lets get down to doing with just a few examples. The example will take the form of a ‘clients’ verbalisation of a problem and the specific ‘form’ of the Meta Model response for this particular problem – got the picture already?

Notice there is no requirement to know the labels for these ‘responses’.

One thing that really is worth keeping in mind if you choose to practice recognising from and responding to in this way to others ( or your self ) –
do do it respectfully and with rapport!

The ‘problems’ or stuck states statements are presented in RED and the verbal responses in GREEN

Your smiling at me that way makes me feel nervous!

What times have you felt nervous before and I haven’t smiled?
Its your interpretation of what my smile means that you say is making you nervous!
Are you saying that EVERY time I smile you get nervous – what if I wasn’t here?
How does that happen?

IF she gets that job THEN we can be sure of improved performance

Are you suggesting that the only way we can have improved performance IS her getting the job?
So you are suggesting that improved performance will only be credited to and caused by her?
How will her not getting the job necessitate an impossible performance improvement?
THEN IF she doesn’t get the job were finished? There is absolutely no other way in the universe to improve performance – IS this what you actually mean?

My lack of concentration made me miss the deadline

What caused your lack of concentration?
You need to change your strategy!
So if you could concentrate you could make the deadline. Think about it!
Since you concentrating now, The deadline is extended one hour away – get on it!

My boss is making me feel unhappy and stressed

What specifically has been stressing for you?
How are you choosing to respond such that you have felt unhappy?
Thats awful! You must be feeling so very unhappy and incredibly stressed out, aww thats sooooo terrible. Sometimes I think there is really no point to life. Ha just kidding, so what’s the first things are you gona do about it first?
When did you give your boss permission to do that to you? ( thanks Ian )

All this dark weather it makes you sad doesn’t it.

It might make you sad, me, I feel great, you know.
Shut up and tell me, You can recall what light weather is like, can’t you!
What did you think about it before you make that particular assessment?
No. Im looking forward to spring mornings and summer evenings BUT you probably cant even understand what I mean BECAUSE your way too sad to…

All of the above ‘interventions‘ take the form of a response to recognising a description of some implied or stated cause and effect. This cause effect model works well with Newtonian physics but kind of crumbles and dissipates with people and living things.

There are several ways to respond. One way is to offer counter examples to either the whole statement or to the cause part or to the effect part. Other ways are to request the specifics, the what, OR the structure, the how of the particular cause and or effect.

The purpose of the response is to create choice and to create choice that is initiated and maintained by self.

example

You make me feel good.

You have felt good without me.
what exactly is it that you choose to feel good about?
Nip skin playfully and “you feel good to me too”

example

His boasting boars me

Come on lets go somewhere else
Its not his ‘boasting’ its your attitude
Then stop letting him control you – choose to feel something else!

enjoy

During a lot of my initial NLP training, the emphasis to me was primarily problem focused. Not in the sense that that the ‘change’ process was focused on a problem, that wouldn’t even be NLP. No I mean to say that the context for change was always a problem context.

People often seek out a good clinician for some assistance with their solutions to perceived problems and equally clients requiring more positive or ‘more better’ circumstances in their life will seek out a good performance coach. Essentially the same processes are used for both outcomes.

During our IntegrityNLP NLP Practitioner training in Newcastle upon Tyne, you will hear the facilitators framing NLP Processes in terms of both solution focused outcomes for ‘problems’ and ‘performance improvements’, and you can apply the same meta-process when using EFT.

My good friend Andy Hunt introduced me to EFT some years ago. Andy provides excellent and cost effective EFT trainings in Newcastle.

Here is my own version of using EFT for feeling the way you want. Before you go try this yourself, I have used this process with a very small statistical sample. About half the number required to make a statistically cogent argument, the results are extremely encouraging. Anyway here is the process and its very simple.

1. Make a statement of what you do want, stated in the positive.

I want to feel X

X may be happy, resourceful, peaceful etc

2. Now, without using the process for the ‘Set Up’ ( psychological reversal )

Use your EFT tapping routine, saying your statement created in step 1. Do one to three rounds depending on your own experiences.

After you have tried this I am very interested in hearing about your experience.

It is surely obvious to all concerned that that old Meta Model is just about hearing some language pattern and responding in a certain way. Clearly not everyone gets this fully the second time. Evidently some people were puzzled and didn’t easily start to apply the Meta Model that they knew consciously so not so surprisingly it got put on a back shelf for a while. So get it out, dust it off and lets get on with making it more easier.

the Meta Model essentially does two things when used ‘as intended’

It assist stuck clients to change – Therapeutic

It gets high quality information – Business / Pleasure / Therapeutic

the Integrity NLP Practitioner in Newcastle naturally will cover the Meta Model and those who are on our Newcastle Hypnotherapy course certainly will leave with an even fuller knowledge of applying this process.

clearly if you are in any therapeutic field like the many complementary therapies or thinking of taking up your calling, you might like to consider our Newcastle hypnotherapy course, anyway it will certainly benefit you knowing a lot more about this set of verbal responses – but clearly, that’s obvious, isn’t it.

See, all the Meta Model surely is is a set of specific verbal responses to a set of very specific words and phrases not so surprisingly ‘clients’ and people in general use all the time, and its probably good to know them.

Obviously of the Arts of Applied NLP is when and in what contexts to apply these specific verbal responses so as not to lose friends and alienate yourself.

The Meta Model – Therapeutic Process (2)

Please note that when you use this ( or any ) process with clients you are at best creating a context where they can change their own situation.

Now lets get down to making this really easy with just a few examples. The example will take the form of a ‘clients’ verbalisation of a problem and the specific ‘form’ of the Meta Model response for this particular problem – obviously!

Notice there is no requirement to know the labels for these ‘responses’.

One thing that really is worth keeping in mind if you choose to practice recognising from and responding in this way to others ( or your self ) –
do do it respectfully and with rapport!

The ‘problems’ or stuck states statements are presented in RED and the verbal responses in GREEN

Well he obviously is in distress!

Sorry but this is not obvious to me?
To whom is this obvious?

Clearly you will understand this!

Who is this clear to?
To whom is this clear?
It may be clear to you but how do you know its clear to others?

They were always doing it interestingly enough!

Who is this interesting to?
This has no interest for me.
Surprisingly I found her drunk – again!

Who is being surprised?

Surprising to whom?

It was evidently all their fault!

Who was this evident to?
what evidence do you have?

Obviously the more you practice the better it gets!

Sorry but this is not obvious to me?
To whom is this obvious?
how is this obvious to you?

All of the above ‘interventions‘ take the form of a response to

adjectives that are ended in ‘ly‘

Detect the words ( adjectives / adverbs ) that end or have been transformed to the word‘LY‘ form and ask yourself the question

does this refer to a ‘whom’

This can be tested with a paraphrase ‘formulation’

take any suspect phrase, remove the ‘LY’ and rearrange it the form below by adding “It is” to the beginning of the sentence then check that when you say it it makes sense.

“It is ’suspect word’ rest of sentence”

example(s)

Obviously ‘the more you practice the better it gets’!

It is Obvious ‘the more you practice the better it gets’!

It makes me genuinely smile genuinely now when some people still visibly cringe when they hear the words ‘the Meta Model‘. Others say “it’s something I have to learn but I just can’t find the time” yet other say “It’s just not possible to learn it all“, actually the Meta Model really is easy.

the Meta Model essentially does two things when used ‘as intended’

It assist stuck clients to change – Therapeutic

It gets high quality information – Business / Pleasure / Therapeutic

For me, and thanks to my friend Ian Berry for facilitating my learning during my NLP Practitioner in Newcastle, the Meta Model just made sense. It clicked. It got me absolutely hooked on what I then called NLP and I now know as applied NLP. The Meta Model is again covered more fully on our Newcastle Hypnotherapy course and I am sure you already know, like most NLP, it’s nothing new, just repackaged. Socrates was applying a form of the meta model in purportedly just 6 questions, some 2500 years ago: Socratic questioning. I will credit him here as he surely deserves it.

See, all the Meta Model is is a set of specific verbal responses to a set of very specific words and phrases ‘clients’ and people in general use all the time. Exactly what these are I will better describe a little later on.

One of the Arts of Applied NLP is when, and in what contexts, to apply these specific verbal responses so as not to lose friends and alienate yourself by sounding like an interrogator.

The Meta Model probably seems a bit complicated because it was ‘coded’ by a professional linguist, John Grinder. So it’s full of horrendous terminology that means very little to most people who aren’t linguists or journeying word-smiths.

Dr Richard Bandler – the real creative genius behind NLP actually ‘picked up’ unconsciously this set of verbal responses by listening to what the exceptional therapists of the time were saying – he was transcribing their sessions to earn extra pocket money.

He went to Grinder to decipher what he was saying and isolating the portions of verbal speech that had the ‘amazing beneficial therapeutic’ effect, The Meta Model ( or the Metal Muddle ) was born. In spite of all this The Meta Model Application is really easy.

The Meta Model can be found in its entirety in The Structure of Magic by Bandler and Grinder – Specifically only chapter 4 & 5 to begin with. Grinder’s and McMasters incredibly windy and painful business-ification ( repackaging ) Precision, brought us The Precision Model which can be be summed up in just one page. Then much later on Grinders and StClaires ( –2003 ) very useful and thank goodness short version of the business Meta Model that they chose to call The Verbal Package.

John Grinder says The Verbal Package is a process tool to get high quality information and a high level of shared understanding of what has been communicated – viz. getting all the unspecified details or Socratic Questioning.

The Verbal Package

Establish Rapport

Set the ‘Frame’ or content of the discussion / exploration

Challenge Nouns ( names and other ) – What specifically?

Challenge Verbs ( doing words ) – How specifically?

Paraphrase what has been communicated for shared understandings

The Meta Model – Therapeutic Process

This process can definitely get high quality information – but this is irrelevant to the therapeutic process - it is used primarily, through verbal intervention, to assist a client in un-sticking themselves from problem situations.

Please note that when you use this ( or any ) process with clients you are at best creating a context where they can change their own situation.

Now lets get down to making this really easy with just a few examples. The example will take the form of a ‘clients’ verbalisation of a problem and the specific ‘form’ of The Meta Model response for this particular problem.

Notice there is no requirement to know the labels for these ‘responses’.

One thing that really is worth keeping in mind if you choose to practice recognising from and responding in this way to others ( or your self ) –
do it respectfully and with rapport!

The ‘problems’ or stuck states statements are presented in RED and the verbal responses in GREEN

I cant finish my report!

Its not possible to finish my report!

What stops you?
So what makes this impossible for you?

Many NLP and Hypnotherapeutic processes are concerned with beneficial change.

If you were to watch a flower grow and bloom over the spring and summer, you will know that in addition to preparing for the next season of change this seasons change does not happen all at once, it is a gradual unfolding over time that culminates in blossom and the increasing of life.

On Saturday I was at my good friend and NLP Trainer’s Simon Bonnin’s and, as we often do we ended up exploring and experimenting with NLP and Hypnotherapy change processes. Now we have jointly come up with something we want to share. It is incredibly simple and incredibly effective.

IntegrityNLP is running an NLP Practitioner beginning this September as well as a Hypnotherapy Diploma course ( both in Newcastle upon Tyne ) and this process will certainly be demonstrated on both courses, however here it is here first.

This process works on so called ‘limiting beliefs’ and the process works at the level of values and importance to loosen up the so called ‘limiting belief’

Here is an example

I cant feel happy [ limiting belief and implied value ]

Do you believe it is important to feel happy?
Do you believe it will be valuable to you to feel happy?
Is feeling happy important enough and valuable enough to change that old belief?

[ if there is a no response to any of these 3 questions respect the answer and stop here - after all this is just loosening! ]

Do you think, it is now possible for you to feel happy.

[ respect any answer - its just loosening! ]

Here is the verbal pattern

I cant ‘X’ [ limiting belief and implied value ]

Do you believe it is important to ‘X’?

Do you believe it will be valuable to you to ‘X’?

Is ‘X’ important enough and valuable enough to change that old belief?

[ if there is a no response to any of these 3 questions respect the response and stop here - after all this is just loosening! ]

Do you think, it is now possible for you to ‘X’.

[ respect any response - its just loosening! ]

best wishes
